Beginner Bass Guitar Packages | What's best for your Player?
69The bass guitar like the folks that play them are often given less credit than they deserve for the music they produce. The bass guitar lays both a rhythm and beat foundation for the musical exploits of the rest of the band. So, they become a bit transparent to the casual listener, but without them nothing would sound quite right. If you have a child or a huny that is looking to take up guitar, it would be wise in my view to explore with them both the regular 6 string guitar and the 4 string bass, before you purchase either. Go to your local music store and ask the staff to show you the difference in tone and function of each, and how they fit in bands and music styles, not to mention the hands of your player.
If when you are checking this out, you see the lights come on in your child's eyes when the deep rhythms start pumping out of the amps you’ll both know that you’ve got a bass player on your hands. If this is the case then you may want to consider some of these options that follow. Now these are not the cheapest packages, but they are not the most expensive either. They offer a little bit better quality and should provide at least two or three years of good sound during the basic learning curve of your player. Then you may want to consider upgrading the instrument to fit his playing needs, be they garage band, home studio recording, or looking for gigs to play around town.
A reality check indicates that most beginner guitars sold at Christmas, end up in a garage sale within 18 months. If that is the case these will hold their value a little better and would probably fetch a Craigs List or Ebay buyer and get you a few pennies more than your garage sale.
The Epiphone Short Scale Bass package would be one of the places I would start for a child under the age of 12. The earlier children start with instruments the more likely they are to keep playing over the course of their lives. Their minds are like sponges and they tend to develop proficiency in the basics faster as well.
Stocking Stuffer Alert!
If you already have a bass player in the house, or are looking for some useful accessories to go along with a new bass, here are a couple of ideas. The RP 80 processor, is a useful tool for the beginner as it has a built in tuner; along with the effects that allow your ‘playa’ to expand his or her musical horizons. The Amp modeling is really cool as it emulates some of the best known amps that the pro’s have been using for many years. It is probably the most cost effective addition to any guitar system. (I own the 6 string equivalent RP-90)
The Vic Furth Headphones are a very useful tool especially for apartment dwellers and for those that have to practice into the evening. This model in particular is an exceptional value in my view. I own them and use them regularly.
I personally like the Hal Leonard learning methodology.

My grandson got a bass guitar about 3 years ago and he learned to play it. He plays with a few of his friends when he's not playing soccer. His mother plays most instruments, so in his case that gave him an advantage. You made some excellent suggestions when deciding what type of guitar to purchase.
