An Independent Voters View | 28th Amendment US Constitution
72I join in the proposition that the following to serve as the 28th Amendment to the US Constitution
Congress shall make no law that applies to
the citizens of the United States that does not apply equally to the Senators and/or Representatives, and
Congress shall make no law that applies to the Senators and/or Representatives that does not apply equally to the citizens of the United States
All existing laws and regulations that do not meet these criteria shall be declared null and void.
It is I think, high time we bring our elected representatives back to the real world of life in the United States. We have heard all the stories, from unpaid taxes on millions. To special treatment by Banks they regulate. The list goes on and on, Republican and Democrat alike.
Even after the recent Election in Massachusetts, it seems the pols just don’t get it. So I think it’s time we bring it home to them. In a united, clear, and convincing voice, we must demand that our elected officials submit to the same laws they bring to bear on us.
Some say that there is no way they would vote against their own self interest in this way; and to that I say ‘Bunk’! They will if we the people, start flooding them with the demand that they do so.
I would take it a step further and email the White house and insist that the President start the initiative, along with the line item veto. I have provided links for you to do both. There is also a link to join in an online petition but I would suggest you contact your representative directly by email, phone, and letter to express your opinion. There is nothing quite so powerful as tied up switch boards and bags full of mail to get the point across.
I cannot take credit for thinking this up and there are other proposed 28th Amendments out there so you should be specific about this one. I think the simple ones work best, and I don’t think we have to get any simpler than this to get out point across. It is also the fundamental point of the TEA Party folks I think, and once again, here the current pols just do not get it. They may pick and choose among the two parties for candidates, but the ones they’ll vote for are gonna listen loud to this message.

Dear Hmrjmr,
Fantastic hub and proposal which I support 100 percent. Thanks for the links. The proposal is based upon the principle of common sense, something that is sorely lacking right now in Washington. Thanks for a great read and a great way to make our voices heard.
Hammer, Bro' this is one that all need to contact and demand they put it on the billet and vote for and pass ASAP. If you want to see health care reform in it's present state get shredded and burned and then replaced by a sane work, this amendment will do it. Thanks for the heads up and I'll be forwarding it far and wide as well as writing and calling to back up my e-mails. As Larry would say Get'er dun.
Hmrjmr, I fully agree with this amendment. Excellent hub.
How do congressmen or senators represent regular people when they are so removed from regular life? They spend too much time listening to corporate lobbyists. Sometimes I think that the left and the tea baggers have a lot more in common than they think, if they would stop with the insults and just get down to what they think is important.
Makes sense to me, which means it will probably never happen...
I am all for it. Where do I sign the petition.
Keep on hubbing!
Im australian, we have a constitution different to the USA, yet your amendment would suit some of our policies too. And I agree one citizens voice can sometimes be the voice that changes the world.
You're right... we've been depending on their character to do what is right- and that hasnt worked out so well.
I totally agree with you and thanks for the links. Love the picture :)
Article V of our current Constitution (at http: //www.archives.gov/ exhibits/charters/ constitution_transcript . html) looks like it offers up two different ways to propose amendments to the Constitution. One relies on both houses of Congress to put forward the proposal, which in my opinion is unlikely no matter how many letters we send to them. The other relies on the State legislatures to call a convention to propose amendments.
Bottom line here is it may be more effective to work this one directly with representatives to your state's government.
Yep Yep!
Hear, Hear!! Kudos to this hub and it is what I have been saying all along....but if anyone thinks the prez will take the initiative to do something which is actually helpful to us the people after raising our debt to 12 trillion in a year and forming alliances with terrorist countries, I would think again.....It is our job---yes, I said our job as American Citizens to keep watch on how they are performing and LET THEM HEAR OUR VOICES!! Too much is going on behind closed doors that is being hidden from us and if we do not make a stand now, our constitution as we KNEW it will be changed without proper voting policies, I wrote a hub describing how this IS POSSIBLE....IF WE THE PEOPLE DO NOT SPEAK UP
THIS WAS AN EXCELLENT HUB...THANK YOU FOR WRITING IT!!!
You've got my vote!
K
It should be on the ballot with the next presidential election. And I agree with Tom (1st post) - something needs to be done about the Supreme Court too. Good hub Hm :)
Right on brother & gonna spread the word to my facebook friends!!
Man, I got a burst of political energy just reading your hub. I'm not a tea partier but I admire their energy. We need to stick it to the politicians just like they are sticking it to us. Their like of shame for such a poor performance is insulting.
Actually, if you do a bit of research on this subject, most of what is claimed @ congresspersons not being subject to the same laws is mostly false. I would direct you to website Snopes.com for starters.
This maybe too late to comment on this topic but I just discovered this hub while searching for information on constitution, very well written and something I can use on my blog. Thanks.

Hmrjmr1,
I support your proposed 28th amendment. It's time the elites lived by the same laws We The People live by. I also have an idea for a 29th amendment dealing with Supreme Court decisions.
